Energia’s Ballylongford wind farm achieves another important milestone

Turbine blades and towers destined for Ballylongford Wind Farm in North Kerry

Energia Group, one of Ireland’s leading developers and investors in renewable energy, has reached an important milestone with the arrival of the turbine blades and towers for its Ballylongford Wind Farm in Co. Kerry .

Energia has partnered with turbine manufacturer ENERCON, to supply six 4.2 MW turbines with a tip height of 125 metres. The 57-m turbine blades and towers arrived into the Port of Foynes in Co. Limerick, where they have been inspected by Energia’s construction team.

The arrival of these key turbine components aboard Enercon’s innovative E-Ship 1, complements Energia Group’s involvement in a number of initiatives to decarbonise maritime transport. The E-Ship 1 uses rotating cylinder towers to harness wind energy, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Padraic Heffron, Energia Construction Manager says, “We’re delighted to have achieved another important milestone for our Ballylongford Wind Farm. This will be our first wind farm in Co. Kerry and we’re very happy with the progress made by the team and our partners on the project. This project is a further example of our ongoing commitment to Ireland’s energy transition and to powering positive change for our customers, communities and the environment”.

Speaking about the return of E-Ship 1 to the Port of Foynes, Cyril Salimon, PM Director for ENERCON Western Europe said, “We are very proud to see the E-ship landing once again in Ireland, delivering components for Energia’s Ballylongford Wind Farm, a key project for ENERCON Western Europe this year. This vessel has been specially optimised to meet ENERCON’s and our customer’s transport needs as well as setting a benchmark in terms of sustainability and low environmental impact by delivering the optimum in energy efficiency.”

Delivery of the turbine components to the Ballylongford Wind Farm site began in late April.

Once operational, the 25.2 MW wind farm will generate enough renewable electricity to meet the annual needs of around 14,500 homes and save nearly 48,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year – equivalent to taking more than 28,000 average cars off the road.

Ballylongford Wind Farm is one of two onshore wind projects being constructed by Energia Group and once operational will bring the total number onshore wind farms owned and operated by the Group to 18. In addition to Ballylongford and Crossmore in Co. Clare, the Group has a substantial pipeline of further projects in development.
