The 18-metre-long tower sections were transported overnight through Monaghan Town and Newbliss Village to minimise disruption to local traffic. Specialist hauliers, Collett & Sons, are delivering all eight 6.1MW GE tower and blade sections. Other large deliveries will include the turbine nacelles – the covers which house the generators and gearboxes. In all, that’s a total of 88 components.
The overnight deliveries will continue over the summer into early October, with the turbine blades – the largest turbine components - requiring a Garda escort. Components will be transported from Waterford Port via motorway and regional roads to Monaghan Town before travelling along the R188, R183 and R189 (via Swans Cross and Newbliss Village) to the site entrance.
The Drumlins Park Wind Farm remains on track to enter commercial operation in 2024 and will consist of eight wind turbines generating up to 48.8MW of renewable energy. The wind farm will be capable of generating enough renewable energy to power around 34,000 homes and offset 58,000 tonnes of carbon per annum, making a significant contribution to Ireland’s Climate Action targets.
Commenting on the first delivery, Energia Renewables Head of Construction Patrick Tierney said, “This is a significant milestone in the construction of Drumlins Park Wind Farm and now means that we are one step closer to generating green electricity on site and helping to drive the transition to Net Zero. Preparing for the turbine deliveries requires precision surveys and planning and we’d like to thank everyone involved in helping to get these impressive turbine components to site.
“We are committed to our ongoing engagement with the local community and we would encourage anyone with questions to contact us and keep updated on construction works via our dedicated webpage.”
Energia will be posting regular construction updates on the wind farm project page www.drumlinsparkwindfarm.ie. The construction team are also sending turbine delivery updates by text.
